Mill Road restaurants

There are many excellent Mill road restaurants, one of them being the fabulous Fancett’s Bistro. We recently had the pleasure of visiting Fancett’s Cambridge for a delicious three course meal and loved the experience and every dish that we ordered.

The Restaurant:

The family run restaurant is small and cosy. From the moment you swoosh through the velvet curtain you know you are going to have a great experience. We were welcomed in by the friendly staff who showed us to our table. The comfort and lighting in the restaurant make this one of the most romantic restaurants in Cambridge I have had the pleasure of eating in. Fancetts menu

The French influenced menu offers 4 starters, mains and desserts and regularly changes to reflect the quality local, seasonal produce being used. The choice is varied and has a vegetarian option in each course.

Starters:Fancett's cambridge

To start, the veloute of button mushroom, with a slow cooked hens egg, croutons and chives. This was so flavourful and rich. The ultimate of comfort. There was the option of adding truffle to this dish but I saved that for later!

faggots

Jon enjoyed the glazed venison and pork faggots, served with a celeriac puree and pickled red onion. The deep, meaty, sticky sauce made this his favourite dish of the evening.

Mains: cheese souflee Cambridge food

Light yet rich, my generously sized cheese soufflé. Double baked gruyere and aged cheddar no less, nestled on a bed of soft leeks. The pickled walnuts cut through the richness of the cheese sauce beautifully. I added the optional truffle to this of course!

chicken Fancett's

Poached roast breast of free-range Cotswold chicken served with savoy cabbage and pearl barley was enjoyed with lashings of truffle and madeira jus. Another flavour packed dish. As a greedy pair, we squeezed in some triple cooked French fries too. Delicious.

Desserts: Fancett's Cambridge

We have to admit to stalking this dessert on Instagram in the week leading up to our visit. It did not disappoint. Steamed lemon sponge pudding with crème Anglaise. Another great example of pure comfort food. rhubarb

Finally, a beautifully presented, dainty buttermilk panna cotta with poached Yorkshire rhubarb and stem ginger. So refreshing and delicately delicious.  A fine ending to a fine meal.

Fancett’s Bistro Cambridge:

Fancett’s Bistro is a wonderful addition to the Cambridge restaurant scene. In summary fabulous food, great service, beautiful setting and reasonably priced. The lunch menu is amazing value at just 3 course for just £25! We will be back very soon.
